A$$ You Assume

We live in a society full of assumptions and people who assume, and more often than not the assumptions are based on negativity. Think about it, how often are we assuming someone did something good? Right. Most times we ‘know’ they must have done that ‘bad’ thing. In addition, we assume we know what is best for everyone. We assume we have ALL the answers that EVERYone needs. We also assume we don’t need the ‘help’ but EVERYone else does. I include myself in this, hence the WE, because I have walked the same mile. The good ole’ assumption mile and honestly, I don’t like it.

Assumptions are thoughts that are accepted as truth without proof (cambridgedictionary.com). Example: when you have never had a conversation with someone but assume they are not friendly or that, for whatever reason, they will not like you. Another example is, you have a meeting and assume the meeting is not going to go in your favor… what proof do you have to support any of these thoughts? And why do you have to think negatively about people and situations?

My mom used to say that when you assume, you make an a$$ of yourself. As a young one, I did not totally understand that; however, LIFE has a way of teaching lessons that words alone don’t.

In his book the Four Agreements, don Miguel Ruiz reveals the source of self-limiting beliefs that rob us of joy and create needless suffering, then offers a powerful code of conduct that can rapidly transform our lives to a new experience of freedom, true happiness, and love (donmiguelruiz.com). One of the agreements he shares is — DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS!! While, this agreement can be a bit of a challenge because we are so quick to assume and judge, through this agreement we must “find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life…” When you ask questions you do not have to create a thought that fits your pattern, you can actually get an answer – from the source.

Imagine how smoothly things would go if we envisioned a positive outcome instead of assuming a negative one. How many thriving relationships (personal or business) could we have if we visualized a favorable result instead of assuming the worst. The same way there is power in our words there is influence in our thoughts. The saying goes, “Watch your thoughts, they become words. Watch your words, they become actions. Watch your actions, they become habits. Watch your habits, they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.” – Unknown

Our destiny originated from a thought… was it an assumption or a commendatory speculation? Let’s change the space that we are in by projecting the best… dontcha think this would help to reduce the number of assuming a$$es there are in the world (LOL) comment below if you agree, a little 😉 ‘

  1. I agree! No need to assume because I also believe when in doubt …ask questions! No need to try and figure it out because your equation may result in an assumption 😏😏. Communication and conversations through simply asking questions and getting clarity could change many aspects of this world! Thanks for this post!!
